Pioneer Roots

Originally referred to as “Mesquitville”, Jacksonboro’s first newcomers settled in the area because of attractive land offers from the Texas Emigration and Land Office in the 1850s. It was renamed “Jacksboro” in 1858 after it became the county seat in honor of brothers William and Patrick Jack, who played critical roles in the Texas Revolution.

In 1858, the first stagecoach arrived from the Butterland Overland Mail and this service continued to run until regular postal service to the town began in 1859.

Just like many southern states, Texas was one of the 11 states to secede from the Union in 1861. However, Jacksboro County was one of the small number of counties who voted against secession which was unique for a southern county at this time.

A Center for Trade

During the 1860s, Texas continued to suffer from Native American raids until Fort Richardson, a United States Army Installation, was established in 1867. Jacksboro quickly served as a trading post and a stop for travelers en route to Fort Richardson. Jacksboro also played host to the famed Texas Rangers and served as the headquarters for the Frontier Battalion.

As the humble town of Jacksboro began to grow steadily and safely after the construction of Fort Richardson, the arrival of the Rock Island, Chicago & Texas Railroad in 1898 increased the town's commercial importance to the surrounding region. The small town quickly became an attractive center for trade and marketplaces. Along with this, the compilation of roads and highways connected it to other cities and markets furthering the town’s commercial importance. 

The 19th Century Cattle Hub

Situated perfectly along the Chisholm Trail, Jacksboro became a gathering point for cowboys and cattle drives heading north to Kansas during the 19th century. Travel through this trail was essential as it was a source of income for impoverished states that were recovering from the Civil War.

This era marked a period of great prosperity for Jacksboro, with hotels, marketplaces, saloons, and businesses catering to the needs of ranchers. Jacksboro quickly became a valuable and essential hub for ranchers, cowboys, and the cattle industry.
